And now... remember that cliffhanger I left you all on? Well... this post will have cliffs at least! Tomorrow should wrap up this wedding trip and then the next day we'll get to the other side of that cliffhanger! ;D

Sunday, July 15th, Loyalton, California - The day after the wedding about half the family went to a nearby mountain lake and the other half went to go hike to the top of a nearby mountain. I went with the latter. Let's go with more like a photo-essay style here.

At the top of Sierra Butte there's this rocky outcrop with the really steep stairs seen leading to the top, on which a stout fire watch tower defies the sky itself.

This one is looking up to the watch tower platform itself. My cousins Linnea and Kateri are up there.

Uncle Mike and his son Sylvan strike a pose on a neighboring pinnacle. My cousins Linnea (Mike's daughter) and Kateri lay behind them.

Looking down at the base of the watchtower (which is still atop the rocky outcropping). Various cousins

After returning from this hike (only 2.5 miles / 1800 feet elevation change between the trailhead and top) we returned to Loyalton, and I believe everyone socialized for the rest of evening? This is a month ago now and my memory is pretty bad. All I know is I darted back to the hotel for an hour to submit my flash fiction submission for that contest. Recall I had to write a romantic comedy involving a chihuahua and a bus stop. In my little story the protagonist goes to the bus stop hoping to get the number of an attractive young lady with large brown eyes whom he knows waits for the same bus, and then a chihuahua shows up interrupting him to his annoyance, but she thinks its cute so he pretends its his, but then he's prevented from boarding the bus because it's "his" dog. I'm pretty happy with it as far as something I cooked up in my head in the midst of a busy wedding weekend and pounded out on the keyboard in half an hour, followed by half an hour of technical difficulties uploading it, finally getting it up with a minute to spare literally.

I thought my brother Tobin was going to take a picture but apparently he took several and gifed them together. such sauce.

I apologize for interrupting the continuity of my ongoing travelogue here, but I'm going to jump back in time for a moment to earlier in the trip. Before I was in Tanzania (tha mainland) I was in Zanzibar (an island off the Tanzanian mainland. Actually "Tanzania" is a portmanteau of Tanganyika (the mainland) and Zanzibar, but I digress). And when I was in Zanzibar, I was trying to update livejournal in a more or less "live" fashion and as such had no pictures uploaded. Well two months later, I finally have the pictures uploaded, so if you'll humor me for a moment, allow me to present just a few pictures from Zanzidoozle:

There were a great many traditional dhows all around the coast. I really wanted to go sailing on one but everyone at the hotels who booked things kept just brushing me off with "no they're not safe! they're not safe!" do I look like someone who cares if it's safe?? ;D

Nungwi, the village I was in for about three days, is up at the northern tip of the island. It's got a pretty well developed tourist infrastructure with some swanky resort hotels, but it's also a center of traditional boat building.

And there's a turtle sanctuary.
These aren't just small turtles. These are baby giant sea turtles. (:

And when the tide is out it's like a mile out.

This is the boardwalk in the mangrove swamps by the Jozani forest much further south on the island.

Also there were monkeys.

The islands of Zanzibar are also known as the "Spice Islands" (not to be confused with the other "Spice Islands" in Indonesia) due to their important historical role in the production and export of spices. Here we have visited the a spice farm after a spouting of the spice melange.

Sunset in Nungwi!

Sunset in Zanzibar Town!

Anyway, this is only a small sampling of my pictures from Zanzibar, please see the rest on flickr. (:

I finally got around to finishing editing my pictures from Warped Tour. Now we're going to play a game where you try to find the random background antics pictured above in the pictures!    I was going to combine the official (written) report on Warped Tour with the this picture entry but considering the mondo-ness of this I think I'll make it seperate.
I might be able to also get into tomorrow's Warped Tour at Dodger Stadium in LA, but I loathe driving into LA.. and if I were to go it would be nice if I had someone else to go with -- whom would also probably get in free depending on how well my +3 spell of get in for free is working.

Also, what is the tour schedule alternating between Nor Cal & So Cal every other day? Its the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of.

Yesterday, Saturday, was "Picnic Day" here in Davis. I saw some official publicity literature proclaiming it "a giant open house party." Presumably that was intended to be read as "open house party," but it could just as aptly be read as "open house party." It is by far the biggest holiday in Davis.
Among college students, if you are not drunk by 11am, you are way behind the curve. The revelry continues throughout the day and into the night.
This year I didn't get very many photos, but some others did. Here's a selection of photos of different aspects of the events, by various people:

Jenn de la Vega walking with the KDVS float during the parade the quad people getting belligerent battle of the bands resupply lines snake out the door of fast n sleazy Party on a roof

My friend Mara happened to be visiting from SF. Reportedly she was impressed by how friendly everyone in Davis is and how fun picnic day was. I only saw her for a short bit on campus while the ska band was playing and later at a part off Radcliffe & Anderson though, as she had her own contingent of ruckus causers to hang out with. She also continued her undefeated poker-sharking habit by annihilating her friends at poker, apparently.
Otherwise, adventures of picnic day can by summarized as the usual picnic day shenanigans.

I actually missed an MUN conference to be here, which illustrates how important picnic day is. However, I sent my assistant, Vice Chief Justice Harney, to the conference in my place. Unfortunately it seems he wasn't prepared for the full PAXMUN experience properly, and had an unfortunate incident with some pear cider. He was also suprised to learn that I hear and see all that occurs at MUN conferences even when I'm not there; because you see I have transcended to become one with MUN.
Pyramids in Bosnia: there's a hill in Bosnie which is strangely angular and well, pyramid shaped. An archaelogist who has just spent the last 15 years studying pyramids in central America has proposed that this hill is actually a pyramid ... a pyramid 33% taller than the great pyramid of Giza. Now anyone can make saucy hypotheses like that, but preliminary excavations have revealed several ancient man-made tunnels, and what appears to be man-made blocks just below the surface of the hill!! The Second Annual1 Procrastinator's Choice Award - Fall 2005
This finals week I actually spent a significant amount of time reading about the so-called barbarian tribes which overran the Roman Empire in the 5th Century -- The Goths (Visigoths sacked Rome in 410 AD, Ostrogoths captured all of Italy in 493 AD), Vandals (sacked Rome for two weeks in 455 AD), Huns (despite modern misconceptions, have absolutely no relation to modern Germans or the geographic area of modern Germany), Alans (started out north-east of the Black Sea, ended up migrating down through Spain and setting up a kingdom in North Africa with the Vandals), etc. It has always fascinated me how history normally treats these civilizations like non-people with non-governments -- who just happen to appear out of nowhere when they trouble a more noteworthy civilization. The idea of the collapse of the Roman Empire is intriguing as well: an empire thought to be the be all end all of civilization, what was it like to experience its collapse?
So yeah, I spent time studying these people when I had no reason to, and in fact should have been doing other things. I think one of my major regrets with college is that I never took any classes relating to this period, despite the fact that its fascinated me all my life (from elementry school till I got excited about diplomacy in 9th grade I wanted to become an archeologist).
My other regret is that I didn't manage to go abroad )=

Anyway, in other finals week procrastination news: last Fall quarter finals week I entertained myself by watching the epic drama fly between SaulSugarman and others on the Daviswiki. This finals week I did not pay attention at all as an epic battle raged on Daviswiki between SaulSugarman and others on Daviswiki. In fact I just recently became aware of it and haven't had the appetite to try to scrutinize whats going on, but it appears Saul is trying to say that Ikea is the incarnation of evil. What caught my attention was the unusual comment "Dude, your ass must be SORE after pulling so much untruth out of it." which someone had made to Saul regarding his facts.

Bailey seriously sat on my shoulder like that 98% of the trip. He was amazingly well-behaved. Originally I was afraid it would be tedious driving down with mr catface, but in the future I think I'd rather have him keeping me company for the drive than not. We're like, Best Friends Forever now.

Final Throes - I need a ride back to OC after finals week ends. Also I have $3.77 in my bank account. I've really moved up in the world since then: a year later I'm driving my mercedes home with my awesome co-pilot and I totally have like $100 in my bank account.
04-12-13: The UCD Nuremburg Trials - The then-members of the ASUCD Elections Committee are tried before the Campus Judicial Board and utterly destroyed by the arguments of the Orwellian candidates. The Orwellian plaintiffs are now the Elections Committee.
Year Ago Last Thursday: Shoot the Moon - Police respond to calls regarding a suspicious individual on campus. Arriving on the scene, they are shot at by the individual in question, return fire. Suspect dies on the scene with ten gunshot wounds, no officers are harmed. This is the first shooting death at UC Davis. This is the first officer related death at UC Davis. At the time it wasn't clear what caused the incident. It appears the Aggie wrote a follow-up article on it, but because the Aggie changed servers and broke all their links, it would take some searching to find.
ALSO, an artistic rendering of the previous day's elections committee trial, and an anonymous poster gives me the crushing advice to "get a life." I think I'm still recovering from that one. ALSO, pictures from my trip down to UCLA.

Year Ago Last Sunday: Procrastinatory Morass - The aforementioned Procrastinator's Choice Awards 2004 -- Awarded to Daviswiki.org. Also, we review some historic murdurous violence that occured in Davis, and in conjunction with others placed a $6 reward for anyone that can determine which campus restroom was the site of a violent murder. This reward was later nullified by another editor who thought it in poor taste, and we didn't push the issue. I'd still give $6 to know though.

So on Sunday my parents and I went on an adventurous day trip down into the far southern end of California - the San Diego outback. As I would learn when we got there, our reason for going was that my dad is crazy. You see, he's running ANOTHER 100 mile "ultra-marathon." And when they do these things they don't just run 100 miles through flat lush shrubbery or something, no, they run it through death valley, or somewhere with man-eating javelinas, or through the rugged hills of inner San Diego county.

Quote of the Day by which I mean Sunday
"Maybe we should ask Kris about his hair, and we'll understand more about the Stegosaurus" - Mom
"Yeah -- why its extinct!" - Dad

Brilliant Thought of the Day:
After mother mentioned to me that there's a "help wanted" sign in the Persian grocery store, she joked that I could wear a turban, and thus not cut my hair.. and I realized "hey wait thats true!" If I could realistically pull off being Sikh or something, I could work ANYWHERE without losing the mohawk! If The Man tries to oppress me, it'll be religious discrimination!

In 30 in 30 entry number 10 I explained various shiznaz in my room in Davis. For this entry I am going to explain the various shiznaz that can be found in my room in Mission Viejo.
Now the thing with the shiznaz in my room in MV, is that various stuff has been put up on the walls or whereever over time, but once up its almost never rearranged or taken down. Thus whats up on the walls is rather the accumulation of everything that ever got up on the walls.

SHIZNAZ II )

As you can see, I was just your average young lad with normal interests.

In other news, today I applied for a job as a bee removal technician.
Also after someone totally cut me off on the freeway and it gave me a brilliant idea. What if they installed little webcams on the front of cars and when someone cuts you off like that you could push a little button on the dashboard labelled "file citation." At that point the little camera saves the last twenty seconds of footage and electronically submits that and relevant speed data to the police and if egregious enough they get a citation for whatever the technical term for cutting someone off is. The same could be done for people riding your bumper behind you as well and other dangerously antisocial driving behaviour. Suddenly the road is a police state and no one dares to be a jerk on the road anymore! And surely you'll feel less roadrage when you actually ahve a recourse (how much of roadrage is just anger at ones impotence to get vengeance?). I think its a beautiful idea.

I have more of an excuse than the rest of you (well except Kristy) to be mushy on valentines day. You see, I talked to Kristy for the first time minutes before valentines day two years ago (excerpts can be found here, near the bottem of the entry). One of the very first things I ever said to her was "happy valentines day."

Two years later, about one minute before midnight Sunday night, I met Kristy under a street lamp in the middle of nowhere. (Why? Don't ask.) (=

On Saturday we went down to the Monterey Aquarium. To do this we spent Friday night at her parent's house in Pleasanton, which involved me wearing a hoodie the whole time to hide my mohawk from them and avoid certain death. At one point her mom asked "what, do you have a mohawk or something?" which issued an awkward silence I broke with "now THAT would be silly!" Anyway, the following are pictures from the Aquarium:

Politically Correct Aquatics
I was also alarmed by the use of "politically correct" names in the Aquarium, such as the reference to "jellies" rather than "jellyfish." The things are CLEARLY not fish and insisting on calling them something other than their established name over concern that someone will make the terrible mistake of thinking they have fins and gills or something is just lame. Catfish (& catsharks) are just as clearly not cats, but you don't see us calling THEM something different.
And the Great White Shark they have they referred to as the "White Shark," presumably to avoid the infamy attached to its full name. The thing IS the world's largest predatory fish (according to wikipedia.org), so I think "great" is not a missplaced part of the name.

A'right the long-awaited Irvine Spectrum Photo Essay (v2) is finally ready for livejournal publication. I say v2 because I actually did a photo essay on the place a long time ago, on a real camera. Much of what you'll see in this current photo essay was under construction then, so if I ever get around to scanning those old pictures they'd make an interesting addition. Right now they're in my photo portfolio, which has been gathering dust under my bed for at least a year undisturbed. d=

Now the Irvine Spectrum is one of the few places one can find "life" around here on a Friday or Saturday evening. In high school my friends and I would all pile into one of our cars and while we'd debate what to do all evening until we found ourselves suddenly at the "Sprectum." We would then eat inordinate amounts of candy and get sugar high out of our minds.
It is also the site of several adventures in The Spectrum Diedrichs Trilogy, which if you haven't read already you must immediately or I'll kill you. Anyway, it had this to say about the Spectrum: "that glorious beacon, the Spectrum, which outshines The Block in Orange in all ways save possession of a Krispy Kremes" (from Episode I: Night of the Fountain), and "They entered the confines of its white walls by the famous cool waters of the west-side fountain, proceeded among the thatched roofs of the many indigenous shops, till they arrived among the hallowed lions by the food court, newly reshrubbed, and stood before famous Diedrich's Coffee." (from Episode II: The Exciting Adventures of Spridonovic Johnny Alfronzo)
I must have been really delirious at the time because the "hallowed lions" are not by the food court (the food court has hallowed turtles), but the famous Spectrum Diedrichs no longer exists, and I haven't talked to Fish in at least a year. Its been more than three years since we wrote the story together over AIM, I probably really need to go through it again and revise it. Anyway enough about my story and on with the photo essay:

A year ago today (Monday) I found myself at "Top of the World" and found myself wishing I had a camera1. A Year later, I can finally accomplish my dream!

But before we get to that, an announcement! I've finally got two people confirmed for one of my rooms for this upcoming year (and two crazy russians, [livejournal.com profile] pavelthegeek in negotiation for the other. Hey Pavel drop me a line and tell me your still interested, it would make me very pleased). Its official, Shalane ([livejournal.com profile] impotent_dream), and her boyfriend Petey will be occupying one of the rooms next year. Me = very excited.

Top of the World
Top of the World is a location in Mission Viejo in the general vacinity of Alicia Pkwy & Marguerite.
Last summer my friends and I spent many an evening hanging out there. Its an absolutely excellent place for such loitering. The only downside to it in my opinion is that sometimes there'd be some bothersome gnats around.
Some people claimed the cops regularly came by there and cited that as a reason not to go there. I have never seen the cops near there but I'd imagine it would be a good idea for them to check up on it, it being such an excellent loitering ground and all. Thing is though, from the road the cops would likely come in on to check on the park, you can clearly see a cop car coming but they wouldn't be able to see people at the top of the park till they were half way up; AND more importantly, there are two exits from the park. There's the main road access to the park, and then there's a road that comes up to the side in a completely seperate place.. all in all this means it would be very hard for the cops to pin someone there2.

1Actually the reason I wished I had a camera was to document further evidence that "gay" Brandon demonstrates rather creepy heterosexual tendencies and I do believe he tries to hide this creepiness by feigning gayness.
2Not that we're advocating in any way evasion of law enforcement personnel. These are just rebuttals for those that sight police presence as reason to avoid the park. If you actually sight an officer we recommend cheerfully greating them and offering them doughnuts. Though last time I did that the officer told me coldly "officers haven't eatin doughnuts since the 70s" (this is a true story) I strongly believe he was lying through his teeth.

Didn't go out today, didn't have a car most of the day and then didn't feel like doing anything this evening. Just now I discovered a new picture hosting site that appears to be the best I've seen so far. I can display my pictures in it for all to see, AND I can use it to host pictures for display here, AND whereas freepichosting only allowed about 5,000 hits per month (which I was actually on a course to conflict with), photobucket allows appx 70,000 hits per month.
Also I transferred more thanksgiving pictures from one of five semiderelict computers in the other room, and posted them at photobucket. They shall be in a lj-cut at the end of this entry.

In other news I was installing quicktime on my computer today, and Apple being an evil malevolent corporation, I took the time to at least skim the terms of use. I found the following highlight, written in all caps unlike the rest of the terms:
THE APPLE SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.
So uh.. don't watch quicktime movies if you're in a nuclear submarine kids.

If you are interested in international events, you may be entertained by the proposed emergency topics I recently promulgated on the Model UN community.

QUOTES
So yesterday upon arriving I had to stop by the yarn store my mother works at when she's not substitute teaching, The Yarn Lady, to do a car exchange with mother. In there I encountered the large and conservative husband of the owner, someone I was sure would disapprove of my deviant hair. Apparently however after I left he said that he kinda liked it. Incidentally I think my hair looked terrible at the time, due to an utterly failed experiment at using mere hair gel to spike it.

In other news I asked my mom if the marine corps had made little brother Eric into a Republican yet, to which she responded: "Unfortunately, he's the only one around here thats put on a uniform and said 'okay you can shoot me now' and he doesn't care whats going on." (Implying its unfortunate that he doesn't follow politics, NOT that he's the only one to put on a uniform)
