Evacuate?

I found a good map of the local fire here, which I believe is as-of today. Note that I commute to work from appx Mission Viejo up the 405 to around the 55 and 405 (you may have to scroll left to see that area but you don't need to zoom in) -- basically the fire extends the entire length of my morning commute!! d=

And no word on it being any more than "30% contained." Its getting a bit scary. /=

*** EDIT 13:49 ***
"Why are all the big doors between sections of office closing?"
"Fire alarm"
"We're havign a fire alarm, now??"
"Yes"
"You'd think you'd hear something"
"Yeah, I don't know."
"Is this just a drill?"
"Probably"
"But it might not be? Who has a fire drill NOW??
" .......

So I dunno, my building may in fact be on fire.

*** Okay it is further explained to me that "these doors will automatically close if there is a fire anywhere in the building. However, each floor is self contained and we will only be evacuated if there is fire either on the floor directly above or below us." Brilliant.

Introducing... Polistes Exclamans!! What appears to be a new addition to our local wasp population of Polistes Aurifers and Polistes Dominulus's. Their most prominant difference is that they're about half the size of the latter two species (at 1.5cm of length on average) and have two thick brown bands (as opposed to Dominulus' black bands and Aurifer's brown triangles).

In other news, I forget if I mentioned it before but bumblebees (the only local native bees) are getting extremely rare in this area. )=

This is what I get to look forward to for six of the next eight hours! The entire central valley looks the same. )= And radio options are a whole lot of mariachi stations, a few country stations, and a few bible-reading stations. I find the latter the most bearable.

Bonus TV Show Idea
"The Real Real OC" - While there are filthy rich people in Orange County, they are not the norm as most television shows featuring Orange County would have you believe. I think it would be amusing to make a show that similarly portrays things that do happen but are not representative, but to the opposite effect. It would take place in remote corners of Orange County like Trabuco Canyon, or the impoverished depths of Santa Ana (OC's largist city). Recently Jeremy and Bob from work had to herd three turkeys out of the road in Santa Ana before they could proceed. Not the OC you see on TV.
Speaking of which, I just walked into the other room where my little brother's girlfriend Stacie was watching "The OC" on her computer. I watched it before about 45 seconds before I couldn't stand it anymore. It was totally insipid. Funny looking 30 yr olds pretending to be high school students just kept awkwardly expressing their interest in eachother, one after another!

Its been super long since I updated. I therefore am going to forget 90% of what I intended to report on from this Christmas break.
Hung out with Shalane a bunch. Went to grandparents house in Camarillo for Christmas. A few days later Kristy came down and stayed with me for most of a week, which was strong sauce. For New Years we went down to San Diego to hang out with Sashie, Little Colleen, regular Colleen, and others, at regular Colleen's brother's place. Among other things Kristy and I went on a hike at Holy Jim Falls in Mission Viejo.

There's a bunch of other pictures from break loaded up on my new paid flickr account (because Kristy is awesome).

Kristy rode with me back up, and even braved my crazy stalling car and drove for a good bit. First we went to Fort Kristy in Pleasanton, then this morning we attempted to drive from there to Davis. This was thwarted for 40 minutes or so by my car refusing to start. Eventually it did, but it later tried to kill me by stalling in intersections in Davis. As I tried to leave my apartment to drive downtown, it stalled in the intersection of Lake and Portage Bay but I had enough momentum to coast to the shoulder on Portage Bay. Got it running again and drove 100 yards to the intersection of Russel and Lake, whereupon it stalled and came to a complete stop in the middle of that intersection. )= Fortunately it started again a minute or two later.

After talking to the advisors in the Dean's office I think I might PELP (P(e)lanned academic Leave(p) or something, basically taking a quarter off school) since the classes I've managed to get this quarter are complete shite and I can't afford to waste units on shite classes since I can only pull two more quarters out of this place before I hit the ceiling and get bounced out.

Little brother (Eric) has been trying to get his active duty extended in the Marine Corps. They finally did it today.
Otherwise he'd have been just short of the new years of continuous service necessary to get Hella College Moneys, due to being deactivated for ten days between bootcamp and activation.

Picture of the Day

Quotes
Following a dinner time discussion between my parents and grandparents on whats new with various acquantances -- Grandmother to parents: "I guess people your age worry about divorces, we worry about deaths." Tobin: "and people our age worry about marriage!!"
Mother, to grandfather: "Want to join my betting pool on which of my children will get married first? The youngest has a girlfriend with a baby, the middle one is in a serious relationship, and the oldest one, well, he's probably getting desperate."
"potted plant? I puked in one of those last night!" -Eric, volunteering information at dinner, New Years Day
"Oh! I think a certain dampness is coming from the sky onto the ground! Yes it is coming quite profusely!" - Mother. Translation: it is raining.

And there were many more I'm surely forgetting.

A'right the long-awaited Irvine Spectrum Photo Essay (v2) is finally ready for livejournal publication. I say v2 because I actually did a photo essay on the place a long time ago, on a real camera. Much of what you'll see in this current photo essay was under construction then, so if I ever get around to scanning those old pictures they'd make an interesting addition. Right now they're in my photo portfolio, which has been gathering dust under my bed for at least a year undisturbed. d=

Now the Irvine Spectrum is one of the few places one can find "life" around here on a Friday or Saturday evening. In high school my friends and I would all pile into one of our cars and while we'd debate what to do all evening until we found ourselves suddenly at the "Sprectum." We would then eat inordinate amounts of candy and get sugar high out of our minds.
It is also the site of several adventures in The Spectrum Diedrichs Trilogy, which if you haven't read already you must immediately or I'll kill you. Anyway, it had this to say about the Spectrum: "that glorious beacon, the Spectrum, which outshines The Block in Orange in all ways save possession of a Krispy Kremes" (from Episode I: Night of the Fountain), and "They entered the confines of its white walls by the famous cool waters of the west-side fountain, proceeded among the thatched roofs of the many indigenous shops, till they arrived among the hallowed lions by the food court, newly reshrubbed, and stood before famous Diedrich's Coffee." (from Episode II: The Exciting Adventures of Spridonovic Johnny Alfronzo)
I must have been really delirious at the time because the "hallowed lions" are not by the food court (the food court has hallowed turtles), but the famous Spectrum Diedrichs no longer exists, and I haven't talked to Fish in at least a year. Its been more than three years since we wrote the story together over AIM, I probably really need to go through it again and revise it. Anyway enough about my story and on with the photo essay:

Photo Essay: The Irvine Spectrum

I promise its more interesting than previous photo essays )

Out-Takes - Pictures that didn't quite make the cut... mainly actually its sepia, b&w, or colour versions of pictures included in the photo essay in a different form. But these are all original size, which is cool because I shrank all the others in photobucket and their quality really suffered I think.

Lets see, of the things I should have done during break: did I actually get another issue of The Chosen Echidna out? no. Did I make sure everyone's topic synopsii were written for MUN? no. Did I send out any of the emails I should have related to operation of AGASA or the Supreme Court? no. Did I at least spend every waking moment hanging out with friends like last summer? nope. Yay for a break well spent.
So what did I do? Well when not hanging out with people or sleeping, I pretty much played a lot of Civilization II. So now I'll just have fond memories of building a communist empire and utterly crushing every other government in the world. Oh like I never do that. I came up with a few nice city names though. My capitol was, of course, Blehtahepdakorum, but other cities included Ux-J'daf, Ibtriblatt, Ibtrixenetox, Blehtograd, Pshasa, Pshabury, Pshagrad, and Trogdor City. Good times.

Anyway, tonight, Saturday night. Well first of all my little brother freakin poked me in the eye!!! Now, this kid is like 18 and weighs more than me, so why he has to fight like a friggin ninny is beyond me. I would have SO preferred him just decking me or something like anyone else would have done but NO he has to jab his freakin finger right in my eye. OHMYGOD it hurt and he so seriously could have like put my eye out.. like no joke what the hell was he thinking? My parents say I should see a doctor when I get back to Davis to make sure my eye isn't scratched or something.. blah. I think I'll do that if it still hurts or is weird about something, but for now I'm just hoping its all okay. god my brother is SUCH a freak.
Anyway, then I went to Taco Loco with the parents, because having always heard me rave about it they wanted to see what it was all about. So that was good. Calamari burger made me feel a liiittle better.
Then I went to Diedrichs to see what was going on there. Alyssa was working as usual, and then Jobee and that guy her ex who's name I really ought to know showed up. I called Tom (Colby) and he and his friend came with me up to the Hub to see Fish.
Fish was mostly busy working but my friend Ashlee was also there and I hung out with her most of the time. I don't really know what Tom and his friend did.. they walked down the street but I don't think I ever really figured out where they went. The bands playing were pretty good I think. I coulda hung around but when Tom and his friend got back they were obviously bored an a wanting to leave so we all headed back.

Returning to Diedrichs around 11:30 to return Tom and other guy to Tom's car, I noticed that Alyssa's car was still there. Calling her I found out that she was still within the depths of Diedrichs cleaning up, but she emerged shortly, along with Jeff, the other closing employee this evening. This guy Chris who is pretty cool soon stumbled over from SOMEWHERE and hung out with us.. he was apparently drunk and stoned and who knows what else... well, not really, I mean he was completely coherent and not stumbling or anything, he was just pretty goofy. While Alyssa was on the phone getting directions for a party he went inside and microwaved himself a pizza bagel, which pissed Alyssa off but then she got over it.
Alyssa then went off to her party, Chris and I hung out for another twenty minutes or so talking, and then we too departed. The End.

Well lets see.. everyone ELSE here is at Ska Summit and I'm like.. totally not. )= This makes me very sad. Not only because I had really wanted to go, but soo many people I had wanted to see again are there. Various people who hadn't gotten the messege that I was not after all going called me this evening from Vegas, and just now I idly decided to check some of my friends livejournals and they were all like "I'm leaving for ska summit in three hours" and it made me sad. I'm for definitely not about to go check the OC Ska messegeboard right now.

AND I have about 34 hours remaining in county here and there some people I'd reeally wanted to see but of whom it looks like I won't.

The only good news, and it is extremely good news if it actually comes about, is that the parental units APPEAR to be considering letting me take the old van with me up to Davis. Its (an '89?) volkswagon van, we call it "the silver zephyr" (as opposed to our 98 volkswagon "eurovan," "the Brick"). If this thing had been transferring into my possession any earlier I could TOTALLY have like.. gone to Ska Summit; but coupling "can I pleeeaase have that car?" with "can I run off with it to Vegas this weekend?" is a bit more pressure than I want to risk in these delicate negotiations.

::sigh:: how often am I really depressed when I write in this thing? Who would have guessed otherwise, I do such a dandy job of pretending everything is just peachy now don't I. d=
In Summary: Blah I hate the world.

   Anyway, my Wednesday:
Around 15:00 I saw the movie "Willard" with Anna. The white rat in the movie that controls all the black rats? Totally racist. Hehe. Anyway, interesting movie.
From there I proceeded down to Laguna Beach to eat at Taco Loco with Angelique. After we each spent half an hour looking for parking (and unbeknownst to us at the time, ended up parking right next to eachother) we were joined by Angelique's friend Eddie and partook of Taco Loco. ::drool::
The three of us then proceeded to Chain Reaction for the show there.
Arriving at the venue I was immediately hailed by the band Solemite regarding the shirt I was wearing "Locale AM rocks! They're from our home town!" Followed shortly by "did you see them play with Sum41?" to which I of course respeonded "uh I helped put on that show." As to my explanation that I'm with Entertainment Council at UC Davis, they were like "you mean like The Lounge?" and I was like "yea exactly" and they were like "oh we did that once like three years ago" and it was all around pretty cool.
Anyway then I was told by someone else that the show was sold out. And of course I was the only one out there who hadn't already bought a ticket. Upon inquiring if the rumours were true at the box office window however, The Man, said he had one ticket left. Which I promptly purchased. So that scare was only momentary.

The show was pretty cool. I was there for Solemite, Suburban Legends, and Mustard Plug. A bunch of the old suburban legends regulars were there, Bubba, Roxy, Fil, Michelle and of course OC Ska Joe. Eric from The List was there I believe; we'd planned on meeting up there, but I never ran into him. )=

Angelique, Eddie and I returned thereafter back to Laguna Beach, where my car had remained. Bidding them adieu I set off to return home. Needless to say my evening was just begining at that point.
Approaching the El Toro onramp onto The Five, I discovered there was an In-n-out there that had not previously been there. It sounded like a good idea at the time so I pulled into the parkinglot and attempting to exercise some freestyle parking in the lot. Egressing my car I was very disappointed to find that my parking job looked completely mundane, I proceeded to order a double-double, consume it, and head off on my way again, innocently thinking that was the last I'd hear of that little experience...

Passing by the Diedrichs off La Paz around 12:30, I remembered that everyone had still been there at that time the previous day, so I looked over at the diedrichs as I passed and sure enoguh there were people sitting in front of it. This is two hours after the place closes mind you.
So I swing into the lot and join them. The group at this point consists of Alyssa, Jobee, Jobee's Ex, and another guy who kinda reminds me of Silent Bob, only he wasn't as silent, and had a goatie. The whole group soon resolves to head off to Dee-oh-Ay (Dennys Off Alicia).
Arriving there we spend most of the time plotting revenge on Alyssa's Apartmentmate. This actually involved a diagram of the apartment. Quote of the evening, by the silent bob character: "what does that spell?" Alyssa: "what? K (Kitchen) .. L (Living Room) .. A (Alyssa's room) .. N (Nikki's room)... uhhh shit."
And then as we were loitering out front preparing to arrive, who should arrive but the girl who had been working at the in-n-out; who of course recognized me.. so yea now I'm the guy who shows up at every late night food establishment. fifty points to me.

Ah, another exciting day in Orange County, where the cops are on a first name basis with the criminals, and know who they're dating. But we'll get to my pulloverage adventure in due time..

First of all, went to a thai restaurant with the family. It was very good, I love thai food.
My evening of adventuring began around 21:45, when I realized I had 15 minutes till Diedrichs closed and hurried on down there, telling Robin to meet me there since he was all about lets hang out at the time. Arriving there I discovered Alyssa had saved two CHEESE danishes for me, in a bag that said "for Kris" no less. She's so wonderful. Robin and Marcus arrived shortly, and we spent at least half an hour talking about how there was nothing to do.
Diedrichs of course closed at 22:00 yet still there were no less than four completely separate groups of individuals hanging out in the general area of diedrichs for almost an hour thereafter. That is how exciting things are around here. Then Robin's friend Travis arrived, with two other individuals, and suddenly four fifths of the band Jack Bighead was present. But then they all went off to get high or something; and being all not about the getting high I remained at diedrichs with Alyssa, the other employee (Jobee?), and Jobee's Ex.
Drama began to develope, as Jobee's passive aggressive behavior became too manifest to ignore, so while her ex was talking to her Alyssa and I went on down to the crazy mobil/pizza-hut/haagen-das uber-gas-station down the street, which I'd never been in before. It has the most RANDOM crazy stuff. I got a Bounty bar, which I haven't seen anywhere other than Ireland, and was very pleased.
We returned in time to catch the end of a heating exchange between Jobee and her ex; he then proceeded to storm off apparently intending to walk home, which I'm told is about eight miles. Hey I walked seven miles home down here once.
A tearful Jobee soon departed in her own car to go waylay the ex (I ought to know his name, having just spent the evening with him, but thats me: terrible with names). While Alyssa and I speculated cynically on this her psychobitch of a apartmentmate called her to make some bogus threat alogn the lines of "if you wake me up again..." (by entering the apartment and going to bed). Not wanting to deal with her crap, Alyssa hung up, and soon was the recipient of a pleasant messege in which her apartmentmate derided her character in numerous ways completely unrelated to any real complaint she may have against her.

After ruminating on this for some time we decided it was time to go look for Jobee and other guy. We eventually found them in a nearby gas station, wary of a police cruiser which was lurking shark-like in the vicinity. After Alyssa and other guy vented a bit about their respective drama, Jobee departed (she'd been in her car at the far corner of the station during this discussion), and we decided to proceed back to the diedrichs.
Scarcely had we gone 500 yards (of the 700 or so total in our journey) than the police car was abundant again. It proceeded to totally pull us over.
This is the first time I've ever been in a pulled over car I think. I wasn't driving at this point, we were in the Alyssamobile. Anyway, the police officer, soon after reaching our window was like "oh sorry, your not who I'm looking for. Yea she looks kinda like you. She's a major tweaker and her boyfriend's pushing meth. I've been looking for her for hours now" or something.

Have been completely unable to get ahold of Nick. Well, neither one, but the one I was SUPPOSED to go to Ska Summit with at the end of the week. Soo... looks like THATS not happening. I should do a serious study of Nick: What Makes Him Flake. I think it would teach me valuable things about people in general and how to prevent others from flaking, or at least better anticipate and prepare for it. Don't get me wrong though, Nick is awesome; I was just kinda eagerly anticipating ska summit d=

So today I get woken up by a phone call from my favoritest Alex. She's way cool. And then looking at my computer I had two messeges that had accrued during the night:

[04:15:46] princsbutternuts: You're asleep, good. Just a reminder: I work every night from tomorrow until Wednesday. So, stop in. And Thursday, or some day BEFORE (or hell, even after) I work, we WILL hang out. Or I'll hunt you down and kill you because if I can't hang out with you, then no one can. :) Toodles!

[10:18:29] nerdrockliz: omgomg we're soooooooooo hanging out

So I did in fact get a ride down here with Eric from The List. It was way convenient. As per my standard operating procedures, I managed to sleep most of the ride down here, making it feel like a half hour trip.
Arriving here sometime shortly after six, I had dinner and about two hours later was at "Hotshot's Billiards" with Sally and some of her friends. I totally got my ass kicked at pool by anyone and everything in the vicinity. Later on Sally and them proceeded to San Diego, where they intended to spend the night and get their party on tomarrow. I coulda gone, it woulda been way fun and spontenious and adventurous, but I just need to rest it up back home just a wee bit before I start getting crazy. At the prospect of me going out tonight my parents already were like "so how are we going to keep from going insane this time?" or something. Every time I come down it takes all of about two hours until heated arguments about whether or not I can go out and how late I can stay out and whatnot begin. Yes, they do still actively endeavor to control what I do, how late I'm out, and where I go when I come back home. Its good times. d=

But other than that they're good people you know? I just wish they could somehow get over the control thing. "well we worry" says mother, and thats all good and well, but her worrying is waaay too intrusive upon my life. Anyway this tangent is slightly out of place because aside from that one comment they really didn't give me much trouble getting out tonight. Mum was like "if you're home by morning --I mean if you're awake -- you WILL be home" and it was funny. I was like "if I'm home... ::devious smile::." (She was talking about what would be for breakfast).

Conversation with Eric from The List
Kris: "so you went to Laguna Hills HS?"
Eric: "yea.. but I didn't really know anyone there."
Kris: "did you know Robby MacIntyre?"
Eric: "uh, yes actually."
I sure showed him, got someone he knew on my first guess. It did prove to be the only person I could name that he knew though.
