Firstlyofall, it should be noted that it is Talk like a Pirate Day. Y'arr.

Yesterday at work during my deck-scrubbing shift we conducted more industrial espionage cunning dastardly tricks, and also Captain Davey bought $500 of lobster traps (not a pirate euphemism). Lobster season starts on the 29thieth and we plan to be out on the water at midnight eight bells! Altogether a typical day aboard our ship.

Anyway, I've been meaning to poll all ye filthy landlubbers as to regarding which coldblooded pirate overlord ya'll will be supporting during the next regularly scheduled mutiny:

[Poll #1057736]

More pictures from boating on Saturday

Also I would like to announce that I have decided to go ahead with the naming of names of shadiest people I've known in ASUCD. This list of people with high scores in shadiness is scheduled to be posted an hour before the first ASUCD senate meeting of the year (for maximum lulz!) ... if only I could find where the date of the first meeting is posted!
Thereafter, by popular demand, I am thinking about on a weekly basis (also an hour before every senate meeting?) recounting my many ASUCD adventures. Many people have asked me fore tales of ASUCD's sordid past -- a time when people like President "The Reverend Tequila" Bledsoe and Lee "No one is suprised he is now a car salesman" Weissman pillaged the high seas of ASUCD politics. And now I can belligerently holler about what I really thought was going on when I was the Dreadpirate Chief Justice.

And speaking of justice, you may recall that a scoundrel by the name of Jose Duran drunkenly collided his vessel into my illustrious ship the Four Geckos, causing it to sink. I was summoned to testify against him in June but the lad jumped ship and escaped. Anyway, he was recently found locked up in the brig of another ship (in jail in another county) and brought to justice regarding my matter -- he pled guilty. He will no doubt now be made to walk the plank.

It has occured to me, that IF Hillary Clinton were to be elected President, that would mean that for 24 years the Presidency will have had been held by two immediate families.

Is this not rather alarming? And why haven't I heard the media point this out?

So reports of documents emerging documenting "abuse" at Guatanamo Bay keep surfacing. I must admit, I've been entirely underwhelmed by all of these. Some list "forced to listen to Christina Aguilara" as abuse. Yes that sounds painful to me, but not to a a point that I would say constitutes abuse of prisoners. Maybe I'm insensitive or evil but:

(1) "a detainee got out of his cell during a search for contraband food and knocked out a guard's tooth with a punch to the mouth and bit him before he was subdued by MPs. One soldier delivered two blows to the inmate's head with a handheld radio, the documents show." ... "The soldier who struck the inmate, and was dropped in rank to private first class as a resul" - hey I'd strike out too if my tooth was knocked out

(2) "[another] soldier had mistreated detainees twice — the second offense involved cursing at inmates — and that his superiors failed to report either episode." - in the first one maybe he gave them the finger? "Investigators recommended disciplinary action against the soldier and a probe into why the incident wasn't reported up the chain of command, but the outcome is unclear from the papers."

(3) "One detainee who was believed to be leading the protest threw what an MP said smelled like water from the toilet on him. The MP tried to spray water from a hose in response, but the detainee blocked it with a mat. The guard who tried to spray the detainee was charged with assault, given a reduction in rank to private first class, which was suspended, and reassigned to other duties at Guantanamo."

"Disciplinary measures against the troops were either relatively minor or unclear in some reports."

I don't know, I think thats some serious disciplinary measures for unsuccessfully trying to squirt someone with a hose who just threw toilet water at you, or for cursing at someone. Worse things happen in high school locker rooms all the time.
Perhaps charged of abuse should be applied to the prisoners treatment of the guards, as international law certainly condemns the use of toilet water against ones opponents. I'd also link here to my entry where I talk about how the inmates have desecrated the Koran significantly more than the guards in Gitmo, but I can't for the life a me find it. )=

That said and before my more liberal friends jump all over me, let me say that from my research into the subject (which I did do in an academic manner having addressed the subject at a recent conference), the international law on the matter of "unlawful combatants" is clear that they should be considered "lawful combatants," ie prisoners of war, until a "competent tribunal" finds otherwise. It doesn't even say who that needs to be but there has been no attempt to trot our friends in Gitmo before any kind of tribunal. And I really don't see any compelling reason not to. So that much is sketchy, but as far as I can tell, there have been no teniable claims that Gitmo prisoners are systematically abused in a manner we should be alarmed about.

In Other News (that might actually be relevant), I'm very proud to say that yesterday my country on nationstates.net, The Glorious Dominion of Blehtahepdakorum finally regained "Psychotic Dictatorship" status after I banned advertising and allowed disputes to be resolved through fencing. I don't think it would be a terrible thing of advertising that wasn't sponsoring something was banned -- ie one can still have television commercials becasue thats what makes television possible, but no billboards or neon signs. I especially think neon signs are a nuisance.
Down the street from me there's a church that has a giant neon cross in front of it. Lord knows I'm not religious, but that neon cross bugs the crap out of me -- its just so tacky.

United States Supreme Court Justice O'Conner unexpectedly resigned today. People have been anticipating the resignation of Chief Justice Rehnqvist due to his ailing health for some time now, but this one was completely out of left field. I think Rehnqvist's current thoughts on when he'll be replaced is "over my dead body" -- literally speaking. I think they're just going to clone Justice Antonin Scalia to replace the two.

Also there's actually a few Snailie Awards I still want to get out, but I don't have time right now... hopefully I'll get on that soon though.

Zombie Rights
So something occured to me in reference to this Schiavo fiasco; if one is going to define "life" in a divinely recognized sense as merely breathing, then that would certainly include zombies1.
Now this sounds silly, but I think it has serious implications. And before I go on I will note that not all religious persons believe the unliving corpse of Schiavo should be continually fed, and not all religious persons have in the past believed in zombies. But in times past the religious community overwhelmingly allowed for the existence of zombies and the like (and certain official bodies officially speculate on exorcisms for example). Now at the very least, the belief in zombies was so widespread that if it was against religious doctrine to terminate them, it without a doubt would have been noted. Thus I think there is really compelling reason to believe that most religious doctrine up until extremely recently would have held that the Schiavo body is not alive, we have no obligation to maintain its existence, and in fact it may well be an abomination which should have a stake placed through its heart.
And for that matter, how is Schiavo different from a zombie? I mean, presumably she doesn't want to eat our brains and her bite won't infect the living with her condition, but I think otherwise she is arguably undead at this point. And as previously noted I'm not an adherent of religion in the traditional sense, but if I was all up in arms about the sanctity of our souls, I would say the continued support of the Schiavo corpse is more an insult and abomination to the sanctity of our souls than the contrary. After all, it holds that our souls ARE inextricably linked to our body rather than that they are something separate. I really think the religious people who are for zombie rights in this case have seriously got their theology in a mix up.

See Also: Yasser Arafat Declared Undead - Arafat, now fighting for the rights of the "un-alive" may well have some things to say about the Schiavo case.
Comic on this Subject - that actually inspired me to these thoughts.

1Do zombies breath?! Even if they don't, their muscles clearly function in other similar ways to achieve locomotion and biting.

Hot or Not, Statue Addition
Once again contention has has been broached in Daviswiki as to whether or not what is currently referred to as The Ugliest Statue [in Davis] is in fact ugly. As usual, we here at Emosnail are eager to resolve this through polling. In fact, renowned naysayer Saul Sugarman also maintains that "those who have not visited Davis or the Davis Wiki have not been able to vouch for themselves on whether or not they like the statue" and therefore we shouldn't prejudice them. As such its of particular note that those readers who have not seen the statue for themselves take a quick gander at it and then weigh in.
The numbers shall be defined as more or less: 1 it is divine; 2-3 its beautiful; 4 it is pleasant; 5 average; 6 rather unattractive; 7 it is quite ugly; 8-9 it is probably the most ugly statue in Davis; 10 it is possibly one of the ugliest statues I have ever seen. This is discounting the gaudy neon peice of archetecture in Drew Circle (nothing to link to? )= )

I caught up with George Andrews, today, recent campaign manager of US Congress candidate Mike Dugas. Though Dugas lost to heavily entrenched incumbant Bob Matsui, Congressman Matsui passed away three months later (this January 1st). It has since been a matter of much speculation as to whether Dugas is going to run again in the special election to replace him.
George Andrews informed me today that Matsui's widow will be running in the special election, noting that widows make invincible politicians. So we I then came to a logical conclusion: in order for Dugas to defeat Mrs Matsui, what he needs to do is become a widower himself! "but seriously, elections aren't won by being funny. Unfortunately they are won by evil phone banks and evil phone calls." There you have it, from the man who got Keith Shively elected. He proceeded to complain about being woken up every morning with phone calls from network reports wanting to know if Dugas is running again, and grumbled about how unruly Daily Show reporters broke his pellet gun.

Yasser Arafat: Dead?? Not Dead?! Undead!!
Paris, France - Conflicting reports have been filtering out of the military hospital containing Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat regarding his condition for the better part of a week. World leader's have accidentally announced their condolences at his death only to find out later that he's officially still alive. On Wednesday however, all parties have finally come to a compromise: Yasser Arafat is undead.
"This certainly solves the debate over where he would be buried" a Palestinian official commented. Authorities at the French hospital reported that they would be releasing the undead Arafat back into his natural habitat later on this week. While it appears the undead leader will probably no longer be involved in Palestinian politics, an individual close to him reported "he wants to fight for a homeland for the un-alive now, a place where the life-impaired won't be second-class citizens anymore and will no longer be subject to prejudicial attacks and oppression anymore ... at least thats the impression I got from his moans and grunts." A friend of Mr Arafat confirmed "they prefer to be called 'the un-alive' rather than 'the undead.'"

Bush Replaces Ashcroft, Claims Radical Conservatism Was Just A Joke
White House, Washington DC- Earlier today it was announced that controversial attorney-general John Ashcroft will no longer be serving with the Bush administration. Bush explains "that radical conservatism my administration formerly espoused? Yeah that was just to get me re-elected. Seriously that was some crazy talk." In a speech remarkably lacking in grammatical errors, Bush went on to announce that the United States will be signing the Kyoto Protocol and other environmental agreements, and that he'd actually recently met with several influential Iraqi rebel leaders, including notably Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and over tea, crumpets and an evening of watching television they settled their differences.
"At one point we were flipping through channels and Degrassi came on. Abu Khalid became enraged and promptly took a nearby cocktail waitress hostage, but I was able to convince them it was an entirely canadian production and they calmed down." As a result of this sudden turn-around, violence in Iraq has come to a stand-still.
"I'm still going to have Michael Moore arrested on trumped up charges and sent to a forced labour camp though" Bush was later heard remarking to an aid.

Politics

So yesterday I'm standing outside the Ralph Nader speaking event talking to noted republican George Andrews when on the subject of politics someone I don't know says to me "you're an anarchist aren't you?" Then aggie reporter Stan Obklobzija asked me if I knew where rabid communist John Green1 was and if I had anything to do with the Nader event.

1If you could cross communism with rabies, John Green would have it.

Former ASUCD President Sara Henry accused me of being a member of the green party in a newspaper interview, the ASUCD Ethnic & Cultural Affairs Commission once discussed whether or not I'm a republican. I dunno somehow it just seems to me to be very unclassy to clearly belong to a particular political stereotype. Anyway, time for a poll:

Also we had an entertainment council meeting yesterday. I was actually given another title to add to my collection - I was declared to have the glorious title of "head grip."
