So I'm online at Kristy's place now. Though my computer has been set up for the new wireless network at the trees, the hardware for the network won't be set up at my building until thursday or friday. Thank god this is happening at the very beginning of the quarter.

And speaking of god, the Agnostic and Atheist Student Association of UC Davis (AGASA), of which I am the chief executive officer, recently got listed on the webpage of a larger atheist organization in San Fransisco, so I've been getting more email on the subject lately. The other day this came in and I seriously can't tell if its intended to be taken seriously:

Greetings From the Dr. Bob Jones Institute Think Tank www.docbojo.com

As national director of BJI, it is my duty to inform you and/or your organization that a detailed analysis of your positions regarding the Bible, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in particular your political positions are not compatible with our own. The Dr. Bob Jones Institute stands for strict morality and a totally Christian Theocratic federal government. These of course are the wishes of Jesus.

Since you or your organization have been tried and found wanting, we must insist that you disband your website immediately and no longer espouse the none sense we have found there. Since the election of George W. Bush as our 43rd and BORN AGAIN president, and since as you know Mr. Bush did speak at the Bob Jones University and is close friends with Dr. Bob Jones III, BJI hopes you will agree it would be wise for you to obey God's will and to do so promptly.

Sincerely,

Michael C. Kelley
Operations Manager for the Dr. Bob Jones Institute
Arkansas

The title btw was "CEASE AND DESISIT." Anyway, I decided to be saucy and reply:

Greetings,
We appreciate your serious consideration of the theological and political wellbeing of our organization. We would like to return the favour and seriously consider your findings. I'm sure you will appreciate our interest in receiving a transcript of the detailed analysis you have done on us. Thank-you.

-K.F.
Chief Executive Officer, AGASA.

The email is a hoax. There is no such thing as "The Bob Jones Institute." There is, of course, the Bob Jones University, which is an entirely different entity, that I'm sure has better things to do than send asinine emails to people with the goal of making the President and Christian Conservatives look like idiots.

Yeah I suspected as much, but it seems a notch too serious for an atheist being sarcastic, didn't ask for money (at the time) or anything else lending to an obvious motive.

On any account today I had this sassy reply:

Sir,
Thank you for your email. The Dr. Bob Jones Institute does indeed have
your
webpage/organization status file available for your perusal. Please
send one
hundred seventy five dollars ($175) to CONTACT INFO at
www.docbojo.com
and make your request in writing. Be sure and note your ref. number.
While
there you may wish to purchase The First Prayer Before Congress for
only
forty dollars cash, check or mo. Allow two weeks for processing.
Yours in Christ

Doesn't seem worth continuing the conversation with whomever this entity is. The email address is "Mike Kelley" [email protected]

Wow, did you look at the website? It looks about as legitamate as a lot of other like-minded organizations. Born-again Christian groups really do do some bizarre, curiously misguided stuff. It's a little confusing that there are like 20 Bob Joneses involved in the organizations (See "Johnson," Blazing Saddles), but they get 1,000 points for the segment "Would Jesus Drop the A-Bomb?"

Yeah I took a brief look at the webpage, just enough to confirm that it certainly looked like a serious affair from that end.

Whomever I was corresponding with gets points for skillfully putting an end to our conversation with the offer to provide such a transcript in exchange for a ridiculous amount of money, as if it does exist (see comment above).

The other direction I considered being saucy in was asking under what authority they had jurisdiction, in light of the fact that as nearly as anyone can tell any authority if existant to speak on behalf of God was delegated to the Pope via [name?] the apostle (I was going to poke around on Wiki to assertain the exact theological origin of the Popes authority).
It has always been a favourite tactic of mine to harass "born-again christians" with Catholic justifications.

There are no born-again Catholics out there. It's a protestant thing.

Yeah thats why saying that we don't think they have jurisdiction because the Catholics do is calculated to offend them.
