So I've been trawling through my pictures on flickr (there's 70 pages of them!), to try to find some to print out and put on my walls. I do already have an album of about a hundred of what I've considered "the best" I'm finding when I look at them with an eye to "would I like to hang this on my wall" a lot of pictures I otherwise feel are good pictures don't measure up, and pictures I wouldn't have previously thought of as among the very best I suddenly feel are.

For example I've decided the one at the top of the entry is one of my very favorites, even though I think just looking at it on a computer screen without thinking about putting things on my walls I'd be like eh its just a mundane scene. But I like the colors and everyone in it seems so composed, and it reminds me of peaceful evenings sitting on that porch in Guinea. That fellow pouring the tea would pour it back and forth for what seemed like hours every day to make it just right. The other guy is the head beekeeping trainer there and I really quite like him. And the girl shyly peering around the side is Fatimatah, a sweet and shy girl.

This is another kind of unexpected favorite, but again I like the color balance and moreover Aissatou and Kamera laughingly trying to pull eachother out of (and/or into??) the puddles I feel is evocative of their cheerful laughing demeaner and makes me happy when I look at it.

Again I feel it seems kind of random that this of all pictures would come to be one of my favorite of all my photos but it is, and I actually already HAVE a large print out of this on my wall.

This one I had printed out a few years ago but it came out with a green spot in the middle and I've been afraid to have it printed out again in case that's some sort of inevitable result of the way the colors are coded in the jpeg or something, but I quite like it and think I'll give it another go.

This one I already ordered printed the other day as kind of a test to see how the k-mart photo printing comes out and how I feel about the size (8" x 12" / 20cm x 30cm). These are the two boats I sailed around on for seven months, up at peaceful Sucia Island (entire island is a national park and does not, I believe, had any regular public boat service so people can only get there by boating in themselves), with Mt Baker in the background, somewhere near Bellingham. I wish that modern boat wasn't in the picture, but its not even easy to photoshop out since its in front of a varied background with the shore and all (but if anyone wants to have a go at it I'd be extremely obliged!!)

I also want to aim to get a variety of different places I've been represented. Anyway, the 8" x 12" photos are only like $3.95 while those nice printed-on-canvas things are around $50 so I think I'll print out a bunch on the cheap and one by one replace the ones I really like with nice canvas ones.

And probably this picture I took of ANZAC cove because, Australia.

If you're interested I'm posting a few more photos I'm heavily considering as comments.

Last night I posted a heck of a lot of pictures to flickr.

In addition to finally completing the set from last trip to Nigeria I created no less than six new sets of pictures: Amsterdam (where I spent about 24 hours on the way back), In Flight (I had some really good views of neat canyons and things in Nevada as a flew over), Food (two new pictures and then I moved a bunch of pictures I already had up of delicious food into the set), Hearst Castle (Which Kori and I visited on our recent little jaunt up the coast), Bee Factory (& some from the research facility. I can almost guarantee you've never seen the inside of a "bee factory!"), and finally Package Shaking wherein we take those packages of bees and shake them out into hives as the sun sets picturesquely behind us.

But our main event right now is the completed Nigeria set, which you can see here:

Less than 24 hours left now till I board a plane to return!!

Just in case you missed the original announcement (it was, after all, on a weekend), I did create a [livejournal.com profile] ljshootout community and am planning to launch the photo contest / fun experience on July 24th. More about it here.

In mostly unrelated news I came across a photographer on flickr whose photography is awesome. It's mostly aerial and really neat:

There's so many really good ones I just posted the one that had caught my attention as I lurked the flickrsphere. Feel free to post links to your favourites! (:

I wrote this entire entry and then when I was literally seconds from posting it my browser crashed (and for some reason doesn't autosave). I absolutely loathe writing the same entry twice so I'm just gonna try to pound this thing out now. ): On the bright side it finally motivated me to upgrade to Firefox 3.0 (had been using 1.0, which I'm told is stone age by now)

LJ Shootout
So I got a lot of positive feedback about my idea for an LJ Idol style event dedicated to photography. I'm thinking of launching it in the second or third week of July (got to recover from June's 30 in 30 first!)
[Previously there were several paragraphs of discussion of the concept here but I really don't feel like writing it again]. For a name I'm thinking "LJ Shootout", but other ideas are welcome.
[blah blah blah I miss what I wrote here the first time but really don't feel like rewriting it. Yes I'm still bitter.]

Picture of the Day

I've used this picture before, but yesterday everyone was talking about how cute bumblebees are so I thought I'd use it again.

Best Picture Evar?
For the final project for the photo class we need to get a picture printed out 8x10 or bigger. It appears we can use any picture we've taken. So which to use?
If there were any pictures I posted here you particularly liked / would think would be a good one to have printed, please advise!
Or you could be an overachiever and review my set of what I feel are my best pictures on flickr and choose from there. (: [and it was in getting that last link that my browser crashed last time, that's how close to done with the entry I was!! ): ]

Another round of thanks to everyone who recommended music in comments after my music post last week. In fact I still haven't gotten around to looking up everything suggested, but intend to.

Song of the Week: The Avett Brothers - Murder in the City -- It's sweet and sad and so damn good that I can't find a song that doesn't sound like shit when it's the next song you play after it. Seriously it's kind of a problem. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] whoshottheshot for the recommendation!

Circular Arguments about Photography
It was recently pointed out to me that camera lenses take circular pictures. Obviously. But pictures are square (obviously).
It makes sense that film was square since it would be a hassle to deal with circular film. But with digital pictures it would be extremely easy to get the circular raw image and crop the portion you want into a square.
With the current pre-cut square you lose a lot of data in the "corners" of the circle that aren't within the square. Esp since most (all?) cameras don't make a square but a rectangle of a 4:3 ratio.
The sensor in the cameras is presently that rectangle shape I would imagine, but can't they make it circular? I think the only reason we're getting served up square pictures from the cameras is because that's what we are expecting!

Errands II

Today I was released from work early because Jeremy's last job was just north of the county line, in Los Angeles County. If he took me he'd have to drive 40 miles north to the job, 40 miles south back to drop me off at the shop, and 20 miles north again to go home.
I took the opportunity to do some more errands. Spent an hour and a half at Save-On as they tried to figure out how to print my digital pictures. Ultimately the plaztards there were unsuccessful. In an unusual tragedy I'd forgotten my cell phone when I went on this errand, and my watch exploded the other day, so I found myself in the peculiar situation of having no way to tell the time. Once I escaped from there I stopped by home briefly before heading out to the Ritz Camera in the Laguna Hills Mall. After stopping at home, the car (the Eurovan) would not even begin to start. Somehow in the two minutes I was in the house the life had been completely and utterly sucked out of the battery (!?). Then I realized if that had happened to me just a few minutes earlier I'd have been stuck at Save-ons without a working car and without a phone!!!!
Then I scampered off with the other car, the Vanagon, to see if Ritz Camera could print my pictures. They did, but when my pictures weren't 2:3 dimensions, rather than shrink the photo to fit on the print with extra space on one side or another, they just took the liberty of choosing an edge of the picture at random to lob off. As I'd already cropped off any unnecessary edge of all my pictures, they were invariably damaged by this hooliganery. I'd expect such boorish behaviour from Save-ons, but it seems like a camera place would have more respect for ones photography than to crop significant peices off of pictures in a completely random manner. Anyway, I now have 70 of my favourite pictures in physical form (and at least 65 still have some merit after the cropping frenzy!)
While waiting for the pictures to print I went down to the hot topic in the Mall, as I hadn't ended up getting any hair dye when I went to the Hot Topic at the Spectrum on Sunday. I'm wearing my bee busters uniform because I set off adventuring straight off from work. As soon as I walk in one of hte employees is like "Bee Busters! So where's my neighbour Jeremy?" Recall I got just about the same reaction froma different girl in the other Hot Topic on Sunday. Weird.
Also today another lady said Jeremy and I look like brothers.

My new boots came today! Sunday's errand running had started out as a search for new boots, but I only got as far as calling every boot source in south county before I realized nowhere down here has awesome boots (and by awesome boots I mean docs). I proceeded to the docmartens webpage and placed an order for a pair of the 8761 series boots for $119.95 (including s&h). More pictures of these beauties can be found here.
Anyway, in this picture they're shown next to my old classic 1460 series docs, which have served me well for four years now. I'm still going to wear the old ones to work though. Hopefully I don't get a yellowjacket in through the hole in the toe. Also note the numerous beehive boxes (supers) in our livingroom.

Caroline and I snuck off during work today. We went around the side of the store to the fountain. It was my first time doing such things, and it only lasted a few minutes, but we tried several positions. Two hours later we tried again and I think it was better.

That is.. we took pictures. We didn't sneak out though, that was a bold-faced lie -- the boss told us to. Caroline modelled a pink poncho and we took pictures. When we first went out the lighting was extremely spotty because it was shining through a tree so there were only a few places we could stand where my shadow wasn't in the picture and the light wasn't spotty on her. Later on around 7:30 the lighting was a lot better.
Shutter delay with the digital camera was particularly aggrevating. Apparently technology thus far has been completely unable to make an electronic camera without shutter delay (this from discussion with dad). One several things I miss about my SLR camera (which I didn't even bring down here), but the ease of proliferating pictures from digital cameras here makes all the difference.
But yea, today was my first photo shoot of someone intentionally modelling for me, usually I take exclusively pictures of people caught off-guard (or pictures of say.. yarn).

Not the most artistic and creative series I could have done but hey.. it was my first time )=

I spent most of yesterday afternoon in a fetal position on my bed. Finally I roused myself out of bed for some delicious stew. But first I found a family of baby spiders (& one parent) on the photo enlarger in the bathroom1, and that cheered me up greatly. Incidentally, at that time Kristy was being attacked by a humungus jumbus spider 450 miles to the north.

Then I tried to photograph the spiders but they didn't come out on any of my pictures, proving they are invisible ghost spiders.

And I got sheared as previously pictured. But see, I the hair is still sliightly longer where the mohawk was.. I think its different and kinda cool, in a "I can't believe you did that" kind of way.

This morning I went in to work at the yarn place at 9am, and proceeded to count exotic bails of yarn all day, such as "wookie hair," "kelp," and "rotten banana."
Later on as I said in my phone post, the owners sat me down and told me their hopes and aspirations for harnassing the power of Ebay and asked if I could spearhead this project.
During lunch I walked down to the new place to be, the Coffee Bean and said hi to Petey and Krispy. Also Agent Smith from the matrix was working the register there at the time.

Remember when I had a mohawk? Yea me neither. Anyway, these are the invisible spiders.

1Yes we have a photo enlarger in the bathroom, doesn't everyone?

Livejournalists prepare yourselves, for I have been unleashed upon the world with a digital camera!! Yes, thats right, its been three years since I last scanned a photograph of mine but the photographic winter is finally over!

Today I took 63 photographs, completed three photo-essays, worked on part of another, and took several brilliant pictures which will change your life.
The camera is not mine however, but the family digital camera, but hopefully by the end of this summer I'll have one of my own and never again shall the photographic winter set in.

You see, my paternal grandfather has been a career photographer for Kodak, my dad collects cameras, my maternal grandfather builds lenses for NASA, my older brother even sometimes thinks he might be a decent photographer, photography runs in my veins.

Also to tide you over until I get the pictures posted, we've got some polls for you, but to save time we've brilliantly combined them in a way which we've determined will in no way bias the results, and so we give you a single highly objective poll of ultimate truthfulness:

[Poll #313742]
If you selected the first option, arrangements can be made at [livejournal.com profile] shid and should be made as soon as possible.
