We have made the trip from Sacramento to Eugene so many times, it isn't funny. I'm from Oregon, and my parents' house is in Eugene, so it has been some 29-30 years of that drive. o_O
On the way up, it's always nice to reach Red Bluff, as that's where some actual terrain starts. Hills leading to mountains, and then it's basically mostly pretty from there on. MUCH harder coming back the other way, where you hit a point of flat, dry ugliness that will go on for 2 1/2 more hours (so, why aren't you home already?).
Thanks to all the rain, Shasta looks just beautiful this year. It was horribly dry last year. But it's pure irony that the best view of Shasta is from Weed, right about where Highway 97 comes in. In Shasta City, it's not that great. But the mountain dominates Weed, which is about the best thing you can say about Weed. Otherwise, that's the beginning of a random stretch of ugliness that goes on until around the Siskiyou Summit (just south of Ashland). Ugly and windy. But the metal dragon sculpture just outside Yreka is very cool. :D
